Back to the topic:
I'm mostly with you, but I do not whole-heartedly agree with all of what you have said. I'm going to reserve my opinions for now, cause I see that you probably have a lot more to say. I would rather let you say it first, but I wanted you to know that I'm not 100% "on your team" (so to speak).
You have definitely painted a rosy picture, but it is somewhat out of order and there is a whole bunch of stuff contained within what you said, that has not been realistically clarified.
You're a smart guy. Think about it more and post later. You named MOST of the sandwiches but you left out all the ingredients. For the record, I do not love Quake or have any addiction to it what-so-ever.
I ended up here because I wanted to learn how to make 3D games. With the help0 of some incredibly talented people here, I have learned a shit load. No ego or anything - got a lot more to learn,but I know I'm not a noob.
This is just me running with QuakeRoot's thread, for the time being, as I myself had this very idea for the past few weeks. Thanks.

With the exception of golden_boy (maybe seven), I'm not sure anyone else is aware they have helped me. I consider making helpful and informative posts, that I need the information of, as "helping me".
@Parsing Delimiters - blah (!= working). Yes it is true, at the moment it is not functioning at 100%. It does work, but a small small percent of a current feature is not cooperating. I will prevail. Script has no power over me. It's like a 2 year old making demands, eventually they shut the hell up and eat their peas.
edit: ^ is no longer true, everything works 110%, if there could be such a percent of 1.

I know Freezetag came together fast for him due to I was finding things I could do to exploit the gameplay and create unfair advantages, and there was 3 to 4 of them. (When I died @ water I found how to instead of be frozen when I was killed as the rules would dictate,I could fly away to find a team mate to unfreeze me,the worst one I found!)
Some of the Clan Arena X (tilted + like it fell over) sub-mods have spawned cult-followings, like the infamous
1 versus 1 AIRSHOT mode, where two players dual ,and depending on where you hit your opponent (down low direct hit or at feet splash is best) with RL/GL , and the only time you can actually hurt your opponent is while they are in the air,so its sorta like a skeet shoot as well. They have formulated custom rules such as , No Lightning gun / First to score 10 points wins , 300 damage dealt = 1 point !!
When we ran out of things that wasn't working according to r00ks plan it seemed fairly stable and then Bruce bailed out on playing.
The second a project like this scores a touchdown or even a field goal, it will get a lot of traction.
But the talky talky stuff is the easy. Eventually someone has to be brave enough to pick up the football and trot out on the field and lay it on the line.

I understand that, for sure. I was just furthering this discussion a bit from my point of view. I've only just starting playing Quake again for a few weeks. Other than that, last time I set "textured polygon model" foot inside a Quake level, hrmmm... Quake 2 came out in... checking... got it... December 6, 1997, I guess that would be about FIFTEEN YEARS ago!

JUST A LITTLE PRECISION
I see a thread like that one here right now that get lot of information and I want to clarify something...
When someone like MagGuyVer/QuakeR00t/Damage/Mindz/Me write a long post what I do understand based on my own experience is that we need to write down our ideas/expericnes/feelings 1st... it is not always intended for others.
Think about it next time you talk to someone about your feelings... it helps you better understand "yourself"... not necesarely the one listening... it's more important FOR YOU and it's very ok (that's why listening is very important... the people are more interested to "understand" by talking than "exchanging").
Anyway my point is... to me it's ok you help yourself (whoever) but at a point we will need to make decisions and I will come back very soon to propose something to help it that way.
Cause right here / right now, this is no help really to go ahead but keep writing to get your mind clear... which will not (probably) be the case of others that are reading you (if they have the courage).
Baker... if you told QuakeR00t what I think... why not share it... our (your) actions could only b00st Q1 sales if we can make more people to like it (try it at least).

Only the message important. Not the messenger. Quake isn't any one thing and anyone can contribute, and there isn't a right or wrong way to do this (i.e. we aren't thought-police Nazis). The value is the idea of contributing some meaningful action to the good of Quake.
Quake isn't about me and never has been. And it won't be about me tomorrow either ... furthermore I find that idea offensive. Did I mention that very thought pisses me off quite a bit? Well, it does. And I'd be a complete asshat if I felt any other way about it.

I don't know if Baker is "unhappy" but more, occasionally grumpy, like anyone else. I get the feeling that Baker is (rightly) waiting for momentum to get rolling before putting his weight, or influence behind something.
It's very easy to get over-exciting in something only to place your faith in the hands of someones who is excuberant, but untested. I'm sure many people are interested in this project, but will remain silent until it becomes something, then throw in their support.
This thread has blown up while I looked away for a moment. Monster - I really don't think this is too difficult a concept to get. It's an Open Source Project with replacement content. Bottom line. That's it. Like OpenArena (Quake III project), but for Quake 1.
If you want to lead out, feel free, it's Open Source, any member can be as effective as they want. I'm about finished with the site/banners, then I'll advertise recruitment on moddb and func_ Google+, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
At this point we're still gathering ideas and what we want to see. So... what do you want to see? And please don't require others to be a part of this project wether they want to or not. You need to ask others, encourage them, otherwise you'll become more of a hinderance than an asset to the project.

Everyone will find that I have very little ego regarding this enterprise. I don't have to be "The Boss," I don't have to have "The Power." However, I want to see it succeed - if any of you have anything to add, or want to lead out aggresively, I am more than happy to let you be effective.
If you're truly crazy you can even tell me to "Go Away, I'm in charge now." But if you do - Understand you BETTER HAVE THE BALLS to make it happen. If I hand something over.... and you let it die - I will be back, I will take the project away from you, and I will turn it in the direction it was meant to go. And I will have no respect for you.
