    just made some more progress

made the lock-parts, which upon closer inspection actually arent so much 'locks' but rather like safety-clamps,
which are made to help keep the book closed and keep it from flopping open, and making it easier to carry and such

    .

funky colors are obviously just to be able to more clearly distinguish all parts

are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?

everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

    • got even more progress to show

UV-mapped all the parts of the book

so now its ready to get textured

intentionally kept all parts of the book seperate so that i can later use the same parts all for the open version of the book.
all ill have to do is edit the wrapper to be open, adjust all parts of the holders acordingly,
and then create a new model for the open version of pages and itll be done.

itll save me the work of having to completely make a new model from scratch,
and itll make sure both models will really look like its the same book
      .

      • How much more you got to go? Your're doing good so far.

        • this is one of the last few items left

after this its pretty much only the boots of flight (AKA boots of speed in hexen),
the new plasmagun thingy, and that ugly-shotgun-recolor lasergun from NSOE

and then all that remains are items which arent used in any maps and would be a waste of time to remake....
and of course monsters, which are way to complex for me to make as of yet

          .

some time ago i had a lil chat with teamonster and kurikai over at the doomsday forums about modelling for doomsday
and they said that if i wanted to make models for doomsday they'd gladly help me with what i need to know.
so once i am done with this i might perhaps make some models for hexen for the doomsday engine

that, or i might remake stuff from hexen2 for use in FTEQW engine, which also supports md3 and thus i dun need to learn anything new for it.
hexen and hexen2 are both games which could really use more loving and could use some more HD stuff.

all hexen2 has right now is a hi-res texture-pack but not a single hi-poly model except the few that ive made for drake which were items taken from hexen2.

and hexen1 only has a half-complete texture-pack with a lot of ugly upscaled textures with filters over them,
and there are quite a bunch of models for it but a lot of them dont look very good as in being choppy-looking and having a lot of ugly texture-stretching.

veirdo has been doing superb work lately with his amazing HD weapons for the mage,
but several weapons for other classes are either not made or look have pretty ugly models

weapons i wouldnt know if id be able to make those cuz of their complex animations and effects,
but environment objects and pickups i could most definitely make for it

          .

however doomsday currently only supports MD2, and DMD which is a doomsday-specific version of the MD2-format.
and md2 is only marginally better then mdl.
it suffers from the same imprecise vertex-position problem and swimmy vertexes with animations,
and has lower limits for polycount and the like then md3 just like mdl.

so perhaps i might way with making anything for doomsday untill they implent md3 support
so that i can just keep using md3 for models and can keep my models as fancy and detailed as they are now

          • Umm yeah... I stopped using doomsday years ago and can tell you I've been playing more heretic, hexen, doom, chex, and strife games straight up and lots of mods then quake the past year. If I'm not using zandronum then its gzdoom both of which are based on zdoom and both have had md3 support for a while now! I can use some nice md3 models for my heretic, hexen and hexen dotd.

Something to consider that any md3 assets would NOT go to waste just because doomsday is a bit behind in model format support. You do good work and I'm sure the players would love the models. There is even a md3 exporter to gzdoom for blender.

Can't wait to see how the book model comes out. At this pace you should try to make a monster before this next summer coming is over.

            • ive seen 3D-models in zandronum, and their animations look very choppy cuz zandronum does not seem to support blender between frames
and only seem to support frame-by-frame animations, as in that each frame of the original sprite seems to only be able to have a single frame of model-animation.

at least that was the case with all model-packs i found, that unlike in doomsday or risen3D the animations seem to look very choppy
cuz the models have the exact same amount of frames as the original sprites did

support for hi-res textures also seems to be quite in alpha-stage currently, as in no support for stuff like gloss and such,
and the engine doesnt seperate doom doom2 and TNT and plutonia as seperate games

example: it doesnt allow to only replace a texture in TNT without a texture in doom2 with the same name also being replaced with the same texture,
and if you add a hires title-screen all 4 will use that same hi-res titlescreen instead of each being able to have different hi-res replacements

i dont know if this is really true all, but at least that is what ive seen with all the replacement content for Zdoom based engines
              .

              • big progress-update!

                i textured the book

should i add some kinda decorative print on the cover or keep it blank like this?
or any other kinda suggestions perhaps?

if nobody has any suggestions/ideas ill export it and release it,
and then move on to making the open version of the same book

EDIT: random idea... simple but looks nice imo

EDIT2: just had another idea for something different which i think is even nicer

this logo is more neat i think and isnt linked to quake as much as the Q-logo

dunno wether i should see it as a compliment or not,

                    • You must not possess any old books similar to your model. Books like that have an interesting smell. If you are into books like I am, cracking an old book like that is akin to smelling the cork from a vintage bottle of wine.

It was a compliment. My post first said "I'd read it" but that wasn't really a compliment cause I read everything that has words on/in it. I'll read the ingredients on a tube of toothpaste if it's the only thing around that has some words on it.

Smelling however, is reserved for the best old books. From the deteriorating leather cover to the faint mildew smell mixed with 100 year old ink that is embedded in every page. You can almost close your eyes and be told a second story that isn't written in words, but imposed in smell from cover to cover.

I have a few really old books and I consider them to be the "treasures" of my library. It's not just the smell though. Really old books have some other cool features. Like the art. You look at the images and you can tell that someone originally drew everything with a feather or hand carved plates of wood and stamped the pages much in the way that money is created. The type may even be a little offset in places because the entire book was printed by some guy that put each page together a letter at a time.

Old books are one of my favoritest things.

*favoritest - it's a word cause I said so. I don't need Merriam Websters approval. Where does that guy get off claiming he knows what every real word is, anyway?

                        • That's a total compliment from anyone! To walk into a real bookstore and I'm not talking Barnes and Noble as much as an old store that anyone might have down town. Some of the books are 2nd hand or more and have lived, and smell so good. Not sure how to describe it any better, but you can smell life and history of an old book.

since you all like it, i shall hereby release the closed version of the book

                            DOWNLOAD BOOK -CLOSED

i couldnt find the closed version of book actually being used anywhere, so for the pic i made it replace the open version.
if anybody knows if the closed version is used in any map and could tell me exactly where, ill make a new pic there

                            .

however while searching for if closed book was used anywhere, i did find out endbane.mdl is actually used in NSOE!
its found in NSOE5, up in the tower with bell near the end of the map.

taken a new screenshot of the 'seal of bane' (which is how its apparently called) and will replace the one in first post with this one

                            • since i made the book so that i can easily edit it to make the open version of it....

ive already edited the wrapper to open it and adjusted all parts accordingly,
and ive also baked new AO-maps for all parts of the clamps already

so all that i need to do now is make a new pages-model and make textures for it,
and then bake a new AO-map for the wrapper and itll be done already

                              • Maybe Im wrong but there is no popular modern "darkplaces" equivalent of the doom engine that Im aware of that has everything you looking for. I doubt you're going to see gloss, bump or normal maps any time soon in a doom engine nor do I see why you would really need them so don't let that stop you.

As for most of the rest of your post thats wrong. It doesnt sound like you have used any zdoom based engine too much or you would probably know that the 1st time you looked at the zandronum.ini or a zdoom.ini config file. There are locations in there to load stuff on a per wad specific basis or global also in the case of doom games. Besides that you can still load mods whether gameplay changes, texture replacements or something else from the terminal. You mentioned TNT: Evilution so cmdline example:

                                Code:
                                zdoombasedengine.exe -iwad "tnt.wad" -file "brutalv019.pk3" -file "my_texture_mod.pk3
Tnt is the base iwad file loaded 1st then anything loaded after can modify the previously loaded file. Whatever is the last file loaded can override everything before it depending on what's in it. So if you had texture replacements in mind for just tnt.wad you can load them in only that wad. Its been done like this a long long time.
