drake power-ups HD

  • did some more defining of the shape of the boot

    stretched top a bit more along the X-axis to make it more tapered like real boots have.
    also added some extra polys to where the leg&foot meet to smoothen that part,
    and i added an extra line of polys at the bottom back to define the heel a bit

    now its starting to look like an actual boot

    yeah that model boot i found only had 1 pic of one angle , but i looked up some more pics of boots which helped a bit

    but if you have boots that look like the type im trying to make, please do make some pics and share!
    i dun have much references which makes it a bit difficult, so pics usable for reference of shape would be much appreciated

    • you could go a different way with it a bit i think this is the inspiration for the idea of the boots

      • I made you a boot base mesh. It could use a little love but, it definitely looks like a boot. I used the least amount of polys that I could, so there's plenty of room to work with it and there aren't a lot of vertices to tweak. The 2 triangles just felt right.

        • @Talisa - oops, I missed your "@me". I can still take pics if you want. I don't have Quake Ranger boots but I have biker boots and much of the overall shape is very similar. I don't know if you saw my base mesh yet but I cleaned it up a tad and uploaded a new version.

          I was trying to give you a "basic" boot that you could subdivide and sculpt away on.

            im not going for a quake ranger boot, this item is a pair of medieval boots like these


            thanx for the base boot mesh, ill be able to use it as reference to fix up the shape of my boots a bit


            biker boots will actually be better for reference then 'quake ranger'-boots,
            since the shape of those will be closer to those of medieval boots

            • just went and fixed up the shape of the boots i bit using gypsy's model as reference


              thanx to your reference model i was able to make the shape look better


              EDIT: and i just added a sole to the boot, which of course is also important

              quite liking what i have right now, it looks very nice i think

              • got another progress-update for y'all!

                UV-mapped the boot, added the mirror-modifier to model to add a mirrorred copy of it,
                baked AO-maps for the boots and put together a texture for them

                of course when i add the wings ill have to bake a new AO-map which includes shadow the boots receive from the wings,
                but i have texture saved with layers as a PSD so i can easily swap out the AO-map layer when i added the wings

                • and.... even bigger news!

                  sat down earlier and completely modelled, UV-mapped and textured the wings for on the boots.
                  so the boots of flight (AKA boots of speed in heretic/hexen) are done now too

                  DOWNLOAD BOOTS OF FLIGHT


                  didnt think i would be able to make the boots and make them look good,
                  but they came out great in the end if i say so myself

                  • the shape and the boot look good the wight in the wing looks to bright in the screen shot but maybe thats just me. the texcher on the boot is outstanding!

                      that the wings look so white is cuz of the lighting in the forgiven maps is quite bright.
                      here's how it looks in blender:


                      same thing you'll also see with the shotgun optimizer. (lightning-bolt shaped thingy)
                      just try and for fun start unforgiven 'unf1' and look at how it looks in that zombie-fight part, and then start something wicked 'wickedend' and see how it looks there.

                      but ill look into darkening the texture of wings and making the contrast of texture more obvious

                      • Good 3d models/work I think the boots of flight () are litlle bit to high poly for a mp game play, but nice. Btw the texture makes the boots look like my grandmas shoes... lol Sry but it looks like an item from super mario May be a better texture will help? Is every model in this thread from you? I am asking because i want to say great job. May be you could help me with my mod

                        This here is low poly but the shape looks more natural. Now i like this one even more.

                        • I played with that mesh a little bit more lastnight. I have it pretty much perfect for a low poly boot. I think I'm gonna go play with it some more, for the hell of it. Ispent a lot of time getting the foot shape right. I don't feel like doing everything that is necessary to post a pic right now, so you will just have to take my word for it that I got it looking really good.

                          EDIT: I went ahead and took a screenshot. As you can see, I cleaned up the shape a lot. The one little triangulated quad on the big toe is because that quad is being bent in too many directions. Where I subdivided it is along the offending bend. Basically, if the boot was to stay this low poly, that split quad needs to stay like that. Adding another level of subsurf could cure the syndrome and allow for it to be removed.

                          Why is it necessary for me to add other triangles?

                          I made a foot shaped plane and extruded it up. I chose the triangular edge-flow on the side of the foot because adding quads would have forced me to subdivide the "sole"/"footprint" even more and I didn't want to add any more polys. I also didn't want to take any away though. So working from the bottom up, my choices were 1) allow a couple of tris or 2) subdivide or 3) go even lower poly.

                          2 and 3 were out of the question so, triangles it was.



                          @Talisa - Sorry, not trying to turn your boot thread into my boot thread. I don't intend to make my boot worth a whole thread of its own... and this is where my boot already was.

                            • just went ahead and darkened the textures of both boots and wings a bit
                              to counter the bright lightning of the unforgiven maps


                              now the boots and wings both look like they are supposed to instead of being to bright
