drake power-ups HD

  • before I say anything, I would like to say I have no idea what the original boots of flight look like.

    I'm not feeling your version. I mean no offense what-so-ever but, those boots look crazy... like hard suede socks with wings stuck to them. Maybe that's what the original boots of flight look like (IDK).

    Really I don't see how you could stick angel wings on any kind of boot and make it look good. If I was to suggest anything (from here) it would be either

    A) get rid of the wings and emboss a wing logo somewhere around the heel of the boot

    or

    B) incorporate leather details in the boot that allude to wings. Kinda like nike has a swoosh and adidas has the 3 lines...

    crazy, adidas made a shoe already that sorta illustrates what I am saying


    I'm not saying "just like this" but I think it illustrates what I mean about the wings being incorporated into the footwear, using the footwear materials.

    Also, you have a lot of subdivisions but they don't really serve a purpose. It makes the boot more "rounded" but your texture is so monotonous that I doubt anyone could tell the difference if you got rid of half of your mesh.

    I just smooth shaded my boot and it looks as round as yours.

    Please understand that whereas all of that sounded really bad, I didn't say it as bad as it sounds. I'm looking back to a bunch of stuff you just did and in comparison this is just blah.

      the original boots are also just medieval boots with wings slapped onto them
      they're more bulky, but thats obviously linked to the fact they had to be super-lowpoly


      its another item which is taken straight from heXen II without any kinda alteration

      .

      also about looking crazy... isnt that exactly what we love about these games?
      they were crazy, and a lot of stuff in them made no sense, but they were awesome

      also again you shouldnt be applying real world logic to stuff in these old games
      if you were to think about everything in quake like that, 99% of the entire game doesnt make any kinda sense at all


      i get what you mean... but sometimes stuff doesnt have to make sense

        This is what i mean. Sry Talisa but the texture is very ugly and the model shape looks like a pipe. It should look like this screen but its exactly like MG said.

          i know its not exactly my best model, and the texture is plain.
          but as said i have zero experience with modelling organic items,
          and my texturing skills dun go much further then recoloring and editing textures i find online

          id need more experience with organic items to be able to look something like a pair of boots good.

          wont deny i also kinda rushed the boots a bit cuz it was pretty much the last item to be re-done,
          and i kinda just wanted to be done with remaking models for the drake-mod

          some day ill have to look at re-making this item once i have more experience in making organic items and also gained more experience with texturing
          .

          • props on all your hard work on this project. it seems you learned a lot and you came out with some quality games peaces. thankyou again for the book keys they have been a fun refreshing change. back to mapping now?

              ive learned a lot along the way while making all these models for drake-mod


              actually, i think i might start making more replacement models for hexen2 in the future

              there sadly are NO replacement models made for hexen2 as of yet afaik
              except the couple ones i made for drake-mod which were items taken from hexen2.
              jeanks HD textures for items are nice, but hexen2 could really use some fancy-looking hi-poly models

              i quite like hexen2 myself as well, ive always been a fan of the heretic/hexen series myself, love the medieval fantasy theme of the games.
              and i personally think this game deserves to have more HD-stuff made for it, and to be given a HD-overhaul


              if i indeed start re-making more items for hexen2 i will make a new thread for that project

              • was bored a bit and randomly remembered the idea i had in my mind for some time to try and remake the Cross of Deflection as a rounded model instead of blocky,
                just purely to try and see how that would look cuz even though currently its a bit more detailed than the original it still doesnt look to fancy at all

                the result:

                on right is old blocky model, on left is new rounded model

                as you can see, new model is already unwrapped, textured and has AO-maps, so its all ready to be exported

                .

                what do you all think, is the rounded model nicer looking or not?

                if any of you like it, ill release this rounded model as an alternate version

                  I think the question is, which one fits better into the rest of the mod/game.
                  If all models are blocky, than the right version fits better.
                  The texture seems to be the same, so pick the right one.
                  In my opinion the overall look/design should be kept (and I personaly like the right shape more).

                      true true, there are a bunch more models which are 'blocky' but ive been thinking of ideas to make those look more fancy as well so they'd all go together.

                      indeed the cross also look good blocky. thats why i'll put the round version up as an alternative version

                      yesterday after posting i worked some more on the cross and re-did the cross-part itself to be better.

                      the two bars were before seperate bars and werent actually connected,
                      and you could see that very clearly when you looked at the model.
                      i went ahead and connected the bars at where they meet,
                      and redid UV-mapping on them so there are no more seams visible at center.

                      also went ahead and edited the texture for the ring a bit.
                      before the left and right side used the same piece of texture mirrored, which was extremely obvious.

                      after doing all that i was finally happy with the model, and decided to export it and get it in-game

                      DOWNLOAD CROSS OF DEFLECTION - ROUNDED VERSION

                      as said ill be keeping both the blocky version and new rounded version available,
                      so people will have a choice which version they like more and wanna use

                              and improving those items with the new skills ive learned since then
                              You should move on to more advanced modelling OR pick up radiant and bring your radiant skills up to match your blender ones. Radiant is a hell of a lot more simple than blender.

                              I say this because it seems to me that you aren't really revisiting old stuff but really you completely lost steam due to running out of things to remake. Now you are remaking your remakes. It's time to move past replacement and into original design. In other words completely forget about power-ups and what-not. You've been there, done that.

                              Actually, maybe even forget about Quake. If you want to get good at blender. Start with nothing but an idea and bring it to life in blender, regarding everything that entails. For instance, maybe you will decide to make something that has moving parts, well, make them really move (some bones). Take some tutorials on how to really and properly UV map. I mean beyond the symmetry of the UV's and into the philosophy of how to professionally cut a model.

                              The point is, you seem like you have the equivalent of writers block, to me. That means it's time to move forward from wherever you are, which may actually involve moving sideways first.
