    • What is a good representative for the single best texture set done?

Something not too new (a map jam, AD) ... not too old (IKS, the brush work is a bit crude, can't see a retexturing hiding that) ... and not too big or complex to install (AD) or too many monsters (Something Wicked, ARWOP).

Cresendo of Dreams, for example, would fit the above criteria.

For levels of that nature, what texture replacement set is the "best" single representative of replacement texture awesomeness for a medium size map (less than 100 monsters, preferably)?
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

      • hmmm.... im personally most proud of my texture-packs for something wicked and unforgiven,
since i had to re-make a loooot of textures for those map-sets from scratch myself

although both of those are huge maps with big hordes of enemies,
and you said you wanted medium maps without to much enemies

        .

other texture-packs that comes to mind are the extended IKblue & IKwhite texture-sets used in mapjam2

those also look really good imo and im personally quite proud of those texture-sets as well.
i didnt have to re-make as much textures for those from scratch though

but they are mostly small-to-medium maps with mostly less then 100 enemies

        .

ill let others add though which texture-packs they think are the best,
as its starting to feel like boasting about my own works

And Map Jam 2. Which if I recall was just maps, not even a Quoth map jam.

          Thanks!

Crescendo of Dreams was compiled by me, but the true author is of course Kurikai and Doom High Resolution Project, I've only compiled them in a pk.3 file, renamed to match the textures names and create _norm with Crazybump. Anyway I'm happy with the results because those textures are very good and the map is awesome, 100% Doom 1 style

An irony about this thread is that it mostly features maps that would be incredibly hard to re-texture.

I don't want to even think about the number of textures in ARWOP. Roman1 by itself has, if I recall, over 1000 textures. That's just that map.

              • actually, roman1 just has 124 textures

the entirety of ARWOP is 99% textures from quake and both mission-packs and a bunch of textures from doom,
and only a couple textures for ARWOP had to be re-made from scratch

so 99% of textures for ARWOP could be taken from QRP's texture-packs and from the DHTP

something wicked & unforgiven both have way more textures and also lot of unique textures that had to be re-made from scratch,
like both map-sets feature a shit-load of textures from episode3 of daikatana

which is the main reason why it took me so long to complete both texture-packs,
cuz i had to brush up my skills with re-texturing simpler maps first before my skills
were good enough to take on re-making all those daikatana textures from scratch
                .

                      • I've just taken a look at the textures used in Dkt1000 and many textures are also used in Rapture (so finally the pack can be completed, the version I've uploaded contains 90% of the textures) Castle of The Dark Ages and many maps from Func Mapjam 6 (my favourite mapjam, I love maps with tons of lava especially with that texture set)

so yeah, naturally the maps in the map-pack use a lot of textures from ep3 of Daikatana

so far its really only textures that i already made taken from my other texture-packs and its barely even 1/4th complete

that mapjam seems to use the most textures from any map-set ever.... a whopping 742 (unique) textures!!!
thats more textures then something wicked, unforgiven and nyarlathotep combined have

I've got a WIP mj6 too. Unfortunately many maps who uses the same DKT textures got different names in .bsp so it's not possible to make a single DKT texture pack that covers all of them (you can do it via script but would take a lot of time)

and sometimes maps can also use a completely different texture with the same name as another texture that is named in other maps

like nyarlathotep, which uses an egyptian texture of hieroglyphs which is called rtex367....
hexen2's rtex367 (a texture other maps use) is instead a texture of a big metal/wood door

such things make it a pain in the ass to try and make texture-packs for all these different maps
cuz of having to painstakingly rename textures again and again to match the names used in each map
