So, it would be interesting to see some basic HUD elements only if they apply to the conditional state of the moment. For instance, ammo numbers are small but readable, but once you start firing they double in size? Same for Health/Armor values. Take damage and they increase, unless below say half value, then they stay at a larger size and maybe glowing edge... hmmm.

analog meters for health are ambiguous, I prefer numerical values.

I wonder how would Quake look like if it had been made the comicbook style ...

          Made using sophisticated tools...

          Featuring unique design...

Hehhhe, office can be a boring place you know...

          EDIT:

          I mean it.

All three of you already play Quake.

Whatever d1554573r is making is meant to appeal to reach out to people that DON'T play Quake.

Making a HUD of numbers is easy. Making a reimagined HUD requires creativity. Both would be options I'm sure.

But making something that caters to the tastes of people that already play Quake is a bit silly, since the goal is -- in fact -- entirely the opposite of that.

I played WOW with similar hud add on, believe me this one should do the trick:

Bars semi-transparent so they wouldn't cover the background - right in front of your eyes, no looking up or down you see your status while shooting and aiming.

Tbh, im working on replacing ID artwork from qrp and i love my pentagram im gonna make my self a tshirt with this:

You should read the rest of what I wrote. I also pointed out that modern games don't even have health bars, mostly working from a "pain system". Hell, some of the most popular PC games are made by Valve, and even those still have numbers only (except for Left 4 Dead, which has a number and a health bar).

Also, when is the last time you've seen a bar for ammo, exclusive from also having a numerical value? Seriously. I don't think I've seen it before unless it's for some sort of energy weapon that has unlimited ammo but requires cooldown.

Thus, I'm not saying it shouldn't have bars at all. I'm saying it should have numerical values, too. That, or make sure it's an easy to change option to switch to the built in vanilla Quake status bar.

If I seem a little defensive, it is from past experience with this kind of thing and other mods.

The one thing that Quake desperately needs and USED TO have years ago, is deep creativity.

Deep creativity can be the spark that --- combined with old school thinking of what really makes great gameplay (and social interaction elements) --- re-ingites the "forgotten future" I sometimes refer to.

["The forgotten future" -- a rich and creative modding-centric utopia that is kind of a gaming Renaissance that everyone thought was going to be the future in mid-1990s --- but it wasn't.]

Too some extent, what isn't immediately obvious nor do I ever advertise it is the fact that in some ways ProQuake is meant to be a chassis to throw other engines rendering on top of. Which is why I am trying to perfect every aspect of it. This will continue to evolve over the next 6-9 months. [I'm not close nor in striking distance, but oddly motivated in part due to some of things MH has done that accelerated some of the "hard" stuff I thought would take forever or be impossible. In several months, I will be in striking distance.]

                        • Only way to see if the hud is of any use, is to test it in game. And like Baker pointed out its e-z to add values if it's not going to be enough.

No, but they are extremely easy and fast in creation, I can make them any way. They would be sweet with qrack i know, actually I have to admit that I love cell-shaded gfx.
