  • CTF League

For anyone that is interested I'm trying to start a ctf league, with the help of a couple other people. The plan so far is to make it a 2 v 2 competition. To make it as fair as possible we are going to divide the players into two tiers. The top tier being composed of the players that typically do better in our pickup games and the bottom tier being the opposite. We then will randomly assign 1 player from each side to form a team of 2.

Nothing is set in concrete as far as how the matches will go, but here are my ideas so far. Each week you play one match composed of two games on the same map (there will be a different map each week). Each map that you win will be worth a certain amount of points to be determined. At the end of the season the teams will be seeded for the playoffs according to their point totals. I figured the map rotation would be something like, ctf1, ctf4, ctf5, ctf8, ctf2m3, red alert, cheat 2, Egyptian pig factory, and "the place of two bases."

Too add a little extra fun to it I figured we would also include a lot of statistics from the matches. After each pickup game we play there's always a brief period of silence while everyone types in, "killstats", "flagstats", "eff", "quadstats" etc, so I figured we could keep track of stats for the league. After each game a player can take a screen shot of the statistics and we can also keep a database of the statistics and update them each week on the website. Along with this I'd like to develop some sort of player ranking similar to something like the quarterback rating in the NFL. This would take into account things like kills, deaths, captures, flag returns accumulated from each game.

After discussing it with a few ctfers last night we got a real positive response, so Frenzy did up a signup page at www.quakeone.com/tourney I'm up for any changes or suggestions anyone wants to provide. I hope that anyone who's interested in playing will check it out, whether you've ctfed before, or never have. I'm just doing this to provide a little extra competition without it being too serious.

sounds like major fun. i was pondering this the other night when a friend was over asking if this game i like and play so much keeps track of stats. is there anyway to implement a stat tracking tool into the mods of 3wave, CAx, and clan ring dm to build a database of everyone stats? probably not but sounds like a neat idea. anyhow... im in cd !

This should be fun and I will definatlely be in the bottom tier .

Capture should be one of the maps I think.

qstats will auto run stats for matches, i can run that if need be.

Ok, Crackdog I added you as an admin on the tourney website, take a look around next time you login, you will see a lot more features available to you. Let me know who else is going to be helping so I can make them an admin as well.

Currently, I have it set so that the winners get 100 points, the losers get 50 points, and a draw is 25. The site automatically keeps track of this, simply by who wins it, it awards the team 100 points. The site is a real beauty, some of you may remember it from the 2-2 CAx tournaments, or from the oldschool hdz days (we got the site/program from Avalanche), except Solecord updated the security on it, so it's a one of a kind site.

Mono, you had said something about the ecliptiq site last night on the server, I'm guessing this is what you are mentioning in the qstats post? We'd absolutely love stats

R00k had also mentioned something about keeping stats, R00k could you clarify that for me?

Crackdog, I'm working on typing up some rules, and I'm not going to be TOO STRICT about it, or spend all day doing it. We're all oldschoolers (for the most part), cheaters are easy to spot, etc, so I'm going to lay down the basics (kinda like the 10 CAx Commandments on the tourney page) and go from there. I'll also be updating www.quakeone.com/tourney with available 3wave downloads, the servers that are allowed to be played on, etc. Don't forget Crackdog, pm me on here if you need anything. P.S. Crackdog, please don't touch or update the news section unless you're familiar with html, as Visine told me he had previous problems with somebody not knowing what they were doing etc, I really dont wanna have to re-do all of it.

For all the players that are interested, or going to be playing in it, we ask that you PLEASE record your demo's because these will be awesome to watch There hasn't been organized CTF in a long time. We love our demo's

I started a setup on www.quakeone.com tourney, it's kind of a preview of how the bracket will work for those of you who are wondering how organized this will be, and the reply to that question is very.

        Take a look.

Rook mentioned something about the server keeping the stats I believe. Qstat will output the states directly to html or related file. I would be willing to run that up. Obviously, if the server or a related client can record the stats and create a usable output file, I say we do that.

            I'm In.

Is there going to be a home server away server type of thing? From many past experiences, there are always problems with this, and whining.. so perhaps we should keep it to one server (Although I ping amazing at quakezone ).

I'm signed up on the site, and see my name under view players, you should make a tourney sign up area so you can set up teams accordingly.

I also really like the idea of stat tracking, at least this will give me some incentive to keep playing and look forward to something by week's end as long as you keep it constantly updated and people don't have to beg to see their stats.

The next step in the future if this all goes through could be a fantasy style page where you pick your winners for the week, and can earn points and win that way as well so for people who don't ctf they can still keep interacted somehow with the games and see if they predicted their winners right (we can call it Quakebet)

Well, I can simply set all the players that aren't in it to observers, and it won't include them in the tournament. I'll verify who's going to be in it and what not obviously by just talking to everybody. Once teams are picked (the site does random teams), I will create the accounts of the teams, i.e. Rampage/Teamate, and once the tournament is created, you'll see who you play. I want everybody to have an individual login name though as you all are doing.

Definately Monoxide, that would be awesome

Are there going to be tournament referees? I think this is going to be another vital reason to having a successful 'season'.

Again, from past experiences, the creeps always seem to come out when it really matters.. my former teammates and I have been flooded numerous times in the past during big matches. There have also been spammers who come in and text spam and so on.

Keeping an admin present or trustworthy ref with admin would help a lot, also to watch out for anyone cheating.

Is serious enough to be news item? Asking because a CTF tourney or league or whatever that doesn't happen would be a bad news item.

On the server issues a lot of people ping much lower at quakezone, but the west coast guys ping much worse at quakezone which leads to a huge difference. If both teams can't agree to play at quakezone (or some other server I don't know about), then by default we should make clanhdz the server, since it seems to be the fairest location for most.

The stat tracking should keep things very interesting. I remember a dm league way back in the day called the "Big 12", where they kept track of the stats and had a leader board for each category. That's where I derived some of my ideas regarding the statistics.

I agree with having a ref for each match if it's possible, but we're going to need a few volunteers. This person can also record the match demo.

Whoever mentioned capture (ctf2m that's another map to add that I forgot about.

Lastly I have rethought how I think we should organize teams and I'm almost leaning towards 4 tiers instead of 2. My reasoning for this is players like Rampage and Bosh. If they end up with one of the higher 2nd tier players they might end up too dominant and when there is a large difference between teams, the result is a dead league. I just want it to end up as fair as possible, because when the games are close and the competition is good, that is when everyone is having the most fun and that is the point of this all.

One other thing, for those of you signed up, (I think there were about 8 players the last I checked) there are at least 8 other players that said they were going to sign up and that's just after one night of asking around. I'm actually pretty confident we can push the numbers up to 22+ which would be pretty impressive given a first run at this. If any of you guys still have contact with some of the older guys who used to play ctf as well, let them know we are getting something going. Maybe we can get even more signed up.

Well, currently within the mod itself, it can spit out autostats to the console on the server logs. It does it in plain-jane ascii, pretty much like in game when u use 'autostats'. This may be sufficient for this tournament, as there will only be four players per match to track.

There should be a few admin/referees present with one or all recording demos with autochase/quaketv on.
Bottom line, this will be a great deal of fun!
