Weapons:

There are a multitude of weapons in TFC, some are class specific and some are used by all the classes. These weapons are often used incorrectly by newer players, resulting in them getting killed. You can learn the proper use of these weapons here.

Due to the large number of weapons in TFC I will only be focussing on the more commonly used weapons, if there is a weapon you have queries on that isn't included here, post your questions at my forum and I'll help you out..

Shotguns:

Shotgun type: Description:
Regular Shotgun:

Many people believe that this shotgun is worthless. But when used properly it can be a dangerous weapon.

The one thing that most people do wrong with the regular shotgun is use it at close range. This shotgun does not deal much damage, but is good at long range. A good example is on 2fort, using the regular shotgun you should be able to hit and damage an enemy on the other side of the bridge, whereas using the super shotgun you wont deal as much damage.

Super Shotgun:

The super shotgun is the most powerfull close range weapon in TFC. This gun is best used against lighter armoured classes as it cuts through armour fast.

This gun is designed for close range and hardly deals any damage at long range, so switch to regular shotgun for long range shots.

Nail Guns:

Weapon:

Information:
Nailgun:

The regular nailgun is given to the scout (along with the rest of the scouts light weaponary).

I wouldn't recommend using this in close combat as the shotguns are much better suited for this. This nailgun is best suited for destroying enemy SG's from awkward angles.

The only other use of this gun is for attacking a stationary target at long range (such as a sniper who hasn't seen you)

Super Nailgun:

The Super Nailgun is a very powerfull weapon, if used properly.

As mentioned above it is also best suited for destroying SG's, but due to its increased rate of fire and velocity it is also quite capable of killing opponents.

One technique you should learn when using the super nailgun is 'circle straffing', this involves you straffing around a target while keeping yourself facing and shooting it.

It is also possible to circle straffe a sentry gun, although it is not easy. To circle straffe a senty gun you will have to time it so that you can get near enough to it to get around it.

Medic Circle Straffing Sentry Gun, demo 2

If you are going to try circle straffing a sentry gun I would recommed you try it on a level 1 or level 3 SG, I recommend this because level 2 SG's lock onto targets faster than level 1 and 3's.

Auto Cannon :

Weapon:

Information:
Auto Cannon:

The autocannon, also known as the 'minigun' from other games is the single most powerfull weapon in TFC in many peoples views. It is a chaingun which can only be carried by the HW guy.

The AC is designed for middle to close range combat, so when attempting to kill someone I recommend you get as close to them as possible, you will also have to give yourself enough time for the AC to 'warm up', this takes roughly a second but it can greatly affect the outcome of the battle.

Try to make sure you're victim cannot run for cover as the HW is a slow class and chasing after enemies is not realy an option.

AC fire becomes stronger at close ranges so when firing at someone try corner them and while firing walk up to them to increase damage.

When comming up against another HW you should prime a grenade straight away, keep holding your grenade while you fire at him. (jump around at little to make yourself a more difficult target) and just before your grenade blows up release it and run backward. This will either kill the enemy HW or bring him down to enough health for you to finish him off with a super shotgun.

Another helpfull tactic is to duck while firing at another HW, this decreases the surface area for his AC fire to hit and increases your change of surviving.

Dart Gun:

Weapon: Information:
Dart Gun:

This tiny little pistol looking thing is one of the hardest weapons to use in TFC.

This is especially usefull for slowing down someone who is running with your flag. 1 shot will slow them down long enough for you team to catch up . But the trick is to learn how to 'trace' someone. Tracing is when you follow someone with your crosshair, just infront of them and then shooting, alowing them to run into the dart. It is easiest to hit someone when they are running forward directly infront of you.

Once you have tranqued someone, use your knife to stab them to death, as they will not be able to retreat fast enough to get away from you.

Flame Thrower:

Weapon: Information:
Flame Thrower:

The pyro's flame thrower is a difficult weapon to use. It isn't particuarily powerfull and requires a lot of aiming.

To affectively use this weapon you will have to use a lot of straffing. (running left and right without turning).

The one major advantage of this weapon is that it works as a distraction, when the enemy has been lit their vision becomes severely impared (especially snipers while zoomed in). So if you are playing pyro and find a sniper hassling your team you should consider lighting him up to help your team out :)

Grenade Launcher :

Weapon:

Information:
Grenade Launcher:

The Grenade Launcher fires 'grenades' which bounce along the ground and explode.

If you manage to hit a person with one of these the grenade will explode on impact, cause a lot of damage.

What you will have to learn is to judge how far ahead of someone you will have to fire so that with will run into your grenade.

This is a difficult weapon to use and it takes a lot of practice to get good at it.

Pipebomb Launcher:

I personally prefer to use this rather than the grenade launcher as it allows you to detonate the pipebomb at your own free will.

To detonate your pipebomb you need to right click (if you're new to the game).

A technique you might want to learn it bouncing pipebombs off the ground so they bounce into the enemy. This allows you to control the distance that your pipebomb travels to some extend.

See demo of me bouncing pipebombs into enemy.

Another technique that is good to know is 'pipe camping'. This involves laying pipe bombs down at a certain point where an enemy is likely to travel over. Then as the enemy is over the pipebombs right click and blow him to pieces :)

This technique works well for when you know someone is comming after your flag, place your pipebombs at your flag and wait for the person to pick it up, then as he's about to run off with it you detonate them.

Medikit:

Weapon: Information:
Medikit:

The Medikit is a versatile piece of equipment.

Its first function is healing, when playing medic it is your responsability to make sure your team remains infection free.

To heal teammates click your 'attack' button while your medikit is out, then walk up to your teamate and touch them.

(/newbie hint :) )

The other function of the medikit is to infect enemies.

An infected enemy will die unless he is healed by a medic on this team.

Infecting people and running away is often considered 'cheap' and useless, but this meathod is affective in distracting defenders (infecting them and going for the flag while they try get themselves healed)

While infecting someone and running works you may also keep infecting them with your medikit until they die (medikit killing), this is risky as the person will notice you once you've started attacking them.

Sniper Rifle:

Weapon: Information:
Sniper Rifle:

The ultimate long distance weapon. The sniper rifle requires you to 'charge' your shots, this evens out the power of the sniper by making them take time to shoot a shot.

-Offensively-

When sniping, find a spot that has a lot of cover (never stand out in the open) as this makes you less of a target to soldiers and other close range fighters. Standing out in the open (which is what a lot of beginner snipers do) will result in you getting killed on just about any server.

When you are charging your gun up your red 'laser dot' will be visible to everyone, so it is best to place it somwhere where the person you are hoping to snipe will not see it.

When sniping other snipers the one major tactic that will keep you alive is moving around. Take 2fort for example. There are 4 places you will find snipers in 2fort, the bottom to entrances and the sniper deck left and right sides. If you are a sniper on the bottom right entrance and kill the opposing sniper , he will expect you to be in the same spot after he respawns. So by moving to the extreme opposite (topleft) side you will have the advantage of surprise, while he's aiming down at the bottom come out with your rifle charged and shoot him.

Another tactic used by many snipers is ducking. This is effective because of the way the TFC characters are modeled. When ducking enemies find it difficult to hit your body, and ducking almost eliminates the chances of you getting killed by a headshot.

One final tactic used by a few snipers is jumping. When hiding behind your cover (say the wall of the sniper deck in 2fort) keep your gun charged and jump into the open so that you can see your opponent, as you jump out duck and take a shot at him, if done correctly you should catch him off guard and he'll be an easy kill.

-Defensively-

Biggest mistake - Running out into the open when there are snipers around. If you do this, you deserve to die.

Another mistake that a lot of sniper make is standing too close the edge of their cover, even if you cannot see the snipers on the other side doesn't mean they cant see you. Your shoulders stick out further than your head and even 1 shot to them can kill you. So if you are staying under cover, get far into your cover, dont hover between the open and your cover.

When approached by an enemy soldier, run. Dont take out your autorifle and start firing. Your best bet is to turn and run , soldiers are a particuar hazard to snipers as their weapons produce splash damage and snipers have little armour.
