Hi everyone, its been a while.

Life got real busy and i just didn't have enough time for any of my projects. About a month ago things quietened down enough that i could start modeling and modding again, and one of the models i've been working on is the Heavy Weapons Dude from Doom 2.

I'll eventually return to the Quake Ogre and finish him off, but here is how the Chaingunner is looking:

      A Couple of Turntables:

Still a little bit left to do, such as some detail on his green undershirt and in and around the creases of the armor, but he's about 95% i reckon.

I just started adding some specular highlights to make the bloody areas look wet. Also added some sweat to his head with some sweat lines.

I won't start working on the Chaingun until im 100% confident i can make it exactly how i want. I'm still sorting out the design and learning more about 3DS Max.

I started a Tumblr blog for this Doom stuff: doom hd

Anyway, ill hopefully be back a bit more often. Not sure when ill start work on the Ogre again, but i've learned a lot more about MudBox, so it shouldn't take TOO long to get him looking good.

      Cheers.

good to see you back here at Q1

        .

the chaingunner model looks great so far!

i personally would get rid of the cigar though,
it makes him kinda look like some silly cartoon-character imo

        .

cant wait to see any more progress on that ogre you showed long ago,
        it looked amazing

        .

PS your turntable links dont work
        .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
        > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

I must have missed the part where he asked for suggestions on it, my bad yo.

Maybe you should have two model versions with and without the cigar if it's possible, to add diversity.
I am like a stray dog, lost in between what I do and what I should do.
But sometimes, all you need is Imagination.

                    • Thanks for the compliments.

It's still early days yet, how the model will finish up is yet to be seen.

I think the cigar looks pretty good and only one person so far has though of it as being cartoony or detracting from his seriousness. That's not to say they're wrong, but if more people mentioned it, i'd consider removing it.

I'm trying to capture the original characters and not make them too realistic. I want to retain that fantasy design and make them immediately feel like modern 3D recreations. This will include some of the more bright and loud colours of the original game.

If the identity of the models is immediately obvious, i'll take that as a good sign they are on the right track.

I think ill be remaking the Pinky demon, as i feel keeping his design faithful to the original games design will be more popular. Doom 64's pinky was great, but a really gritty high detailed version of the original Pinky would be truly terrifying.

                      • I think it really adds to the model IMHO. Much like the cigar "Sarge" is always chomping on in Q3A.

                          • Yes, sarge is a good example, I wanted to make him look not only tougher but higher ranked than the rifle and shotgun guys. I didn't want to add some kind of higher rank looking symbols or badges, cause that kind of level of detail is not doom. I thought the cigar made him look more experienced, as if it's something only a more experienced soldier would do.

Dooms greatest charm is its satisfying simplicity. There's no back story with corporate bs to keep track of, and the demons have simple goals. Get closer to you while trying to kill you.

I've been playing back through Doom 3 with sikkmod and high res textures. The game is stunning. I've played with a lot of different high end engines over the last three years, and the quality of the rendering rvials anything else I've tried. It's just so crisp and flawless.

I was leaning towards using a Doom source port or a high end Quake2 engine, but I'm pretty sure I'll be using Doom 3 now.

If you haven't tried sikkmod and the texture packs, you need to.

I tried when I first got my oculus rift but was not able to get anything working. I was using bfg edition, which is rubbish Btw, you need the original version of Doom 3, patched to 1.3 or whate very the latest is.

You need to edit your config file to get the high res textures to work. I can post more detailed instructions if needed, but you should definitely give it a go!

                            • well it was not a complaint, he does look good with the cigar too.
and of course its your depiction of the chaingunner

cigar kinda makes me have to think back of conker

shame there's currently no doom-engines which would support a model like that,
cuz it looks amazing and it would be absolutely awesome to see it in-game <3

                              .

and doom 3 with sikkmod plus HD textures is indeed awesome!

                              • Doom 3 supports models like that, you just need to make a lower poly mesh and bake the high details onto it, via a normal map or even a displacement map.

The Doom 3 engine with some modding to support multi core cpus would be a monster.
