Some
minor face-lifting... -Teatime
Well, minor it might
be, still I hope it is noticeable.
Let's say we thought it was about
time to clean up the Fort a bit, brushing out the dust and tidy up our closets
and cabinets. We are not quite done yet, there is still stuff in the dungeons
to take care of, and we have to fix the gallery, but hopefully it does not only
look a bit prettier, but also has become a little more easy to survey.
As it was me in all my unl33tness
who did most of the design, do not be surprised if anything looks strange, if
a link is broken or if your browser is trying to do odd things. Mea culpa.
For most of the things which actually work
I have to thank The
Warthog for all his help and his patience when I approached with
yet another stupid question Also a big thanks to StealthRT
for creating the kickass logo for us.
I hope that Bundy - as the founder
of the Fort and a model of everything the Fort stands for - will approve what
I did here ...
Now as this is (almost) done it's
about time to reload the cannons, to close the drawbridge and to continue pounding
the values of Honor, Sportsmanship and Teamplay into the heads of the community
:-)

Apologies, and an explanation...
-Totentanz
Tot has been rather scarce over here
on The Fort, and remiss in his duties here and
elsewhere. I'm lucky to make a coupla posts in the PF forums on occasion, as
is. Although I prefer to NOT talk about my personal life here, I think that
I owe you folks an explanation as to why I'm not holding up my end, and making
Teatime do all the work.
As I've mentioned to only a few people
in the community, mostly the other PF staffers and my comrades in BTEG
- my health has taken a dive into the shitter since about early last summer.
I'm having some as-yet unknown pain and difficulties in my abdominal area -
which when it flares up, sends me to the Emergency Room to get a hit of Demerol
to kill the pain. And sometimes results in my staying there for a day or two.
I've gone thru just about every possible test the doctors can think of - CTscan,
X-rays, Colonoscopy (which I do NOT recommend for
anyone to have done - trust me on this, folks) - and the doctors and specialists
can't come up with a reason WHY this is happening. I'm on the diet from hell,
and what I can eat is VERY limited, and anything "fun" - like alcohol,
sodas, spicy foods, fried foods, etc - is completely out of the question. I've
lost over 30 pounds in two months, cause some days I just can't eat - basically
giving me a really low energy level. My schedule is usually work, sleep - with
the occasional visit to the doctor or hospital mixed in. Work has become a madhouse
- we're at half the staff we were 6 months ago, so I can't work on reviews and
web stuff while at work anymore. I try to make the time to pop online and frag
it up a bit - if I'm not too damned tired to do so.
I'm NOT
looking for sympathy, mind you - I just wanted all the readers to know why my
backlog of projects - which include working on the TFC
Reform page, finishing up my UnF review, and a coupla good rants I told
Teatime I'd write - have all fallen to the wayside. :(
I've seriously considered just hanging up my rocket launcher and leaving my
position in the community - as I've been unable to devote the time required
to do so. It's depressing, frankly.
Add to this my growing dissatisfaction
with the state of TFC (I refuse to call it TF1.5
- the REAL TF stayed behind with QuakeWorld), and
it's so-called "community". I remember when being -TPF-
meant something, and if you encountered a member on a server, you knew they
weren't going to be an arsehole. As it is, these days the only TPF people I
"trust" - are the old guard - those I remember being around when we
first started it off - and those newer individuals I recognize by name and reputation.
The others - you have to prove yourselves to me, by your behavior.
So, I've come to a decision. This
upcoming patch Valve has promised us - the one with the new models - will be
the deciding point for Tot. I'll be taking a long, hard look at ALL facets
of TFC then - I've made my opinion of the netcode crystal-clear on several occasions..
I'll evaluate the state of the community, the general attitude of the players
- and then I'll decide if it's worth expending the time and energy to stay with
this mod. If I rule against it - I'll be deleting Half-Life from my system,
pulling out of the TFC Reform project completely, and devoting myself to other
games I enjoy MUCH more these days.
Moving on to the next subject - TF
mods I have MUCH more fun playing - I've been having some difficulties
with them, and I've posted some questions about it in their respective forums
to see if I can get some help - but I'd do it here as well. I prefer to play
either Q3F or UnF
these days - both engines have superior netcode, and the people aren't complete
jerks when you get on a server. My problems with Quake3Fortress
as as follows: I get dropped from the server over 50% of the time I try playing
these days, with either the "Lost Reliable Commands"
errors, the "CL_ParseServerMessage: illegible server
message", or the "CL_FlushPackets"
one. Some conjecture on the Q3F forums seems to think it's connected with the
LinkSys router I use for my home network. I never had the problem until I udpated
the firmware to support IpSec, so I can VPN to work from home. As for Unreal
Fortress - I just have a devil of a time trying to connect to servers, and
only about 5% of the time, when the map changes at the end of a level, do I
successfully load the next map. Needless to say, this is not making me happy,
and I end up playing TFC, cause I can usually stay connected there, at least.
:( If anyone can help me solve these issues, I would be VERY happy. I'm presently
running firmware revision 1.36 on my LinkSys Ethernet Cable/DSL Router, because
when I loaded 1.37, I could connect outside my LAN with my Unix box, but not
with my Win98SE box.
Anyhow, that's enough babbling from
me for one day. I don't know when I'll post again, or if it'll be before the
fateful day when I decide whether to purge TFC from my system or not. Until
then, I hope all you folks are having better luck, both on and off the battlefields
- than I've been having as of late...

Sportsmanship...
-Teatime
What does sportsmanship
mean in the realms of TFC? What would I consider to be sportsmanlike?
(Disclaimer:
My main focus here - as usual - is on pubs games. Clan members will find many
points mentioned below not fitting for clan matches. Yet I think sportsmanship
has its place in clan matches as well, but requires a different focus).
To start with I'd say:
Fairness and Fairplay.
Playing fair means not to use any
tactics or actions, which are against the rules. But I would like to point out
that the 'rules' of TFC are laid out very roughly and are by no means neither
explicit nor exhaustive.
The Physical rules are defined by the creators of the game. Eventually
it's up to them to decide which actions are parts of the game or not. The removal
of the quickdet script was such a case where Valve stepped in to adjust a bug
in the game engine.
This is the layer most people look at: Playing inside the boundaries of the
game engine without cheating. However, it is clear that there are other components
involved, like game ethics, behaviour and conduct. For example there is no explicit
rule, which forbids to block a door by building a sentry there or to kill a
teammate when friendly fire is enabled. Yet I think a vast majority would agree
that such behaviour (usually by what we call lamers) is against the way the
game should be played.
Between this behaviour and the way of playing the game properly is a grey area
that often enough is controversial and discussed fiercely, like respawn camping,
spamming, etc.
Sportsmanship adds another layer
to the subject. It has much to do with the way you treat other players and your
code of conduct inside the game.
In relation to the other players it means to treat them with respect and to
acknowledge their right to enjoy the game
as well. I would even go that far to say that it also holds the obligation
to try making the game enjoyable for the participating players (inside the boundaries
of common sense).
But it also suggests a certain level of conduct.
This includes refraining from cheap tactics, to
keep from harassing other players and to show a
little dignity, especially when facing defeat.
It also means to keep teams even, definitely in
numbers but sometimes circumstances suggest including skill to the equation.
What would I consider 'cheap tactics'?
Respawn camping, Spamming, Camp'n'Spam and similar things (a pet peeve of mine
is building sentries in the enemy base on servers with few players or lots of
newbies).
While these tactics may hold a certain tactical value in many cases they are
not required to play the game successfully and often enough just damage the
atmosphere on the server. Often enough people are using these tactics for no
tactical value at all, but solely to piss other players off. In such cases I
fail to see any difference to the actions of your common lamer.
So why should a player act sportsmanlike?
Isn't it enough to refrain from cheating, to play fair and to follow the rules
of the game?
The simple answer is: It
helps enormously to keep games enjoyable!
Some people might consider being sportsmanlike as a weakness. It is not!
A sportsmanlike conduct does in no way veil your skill. Being polite and to
acknowledge other people's skill does not make you appear a bad player. Trying
to extend the term fairness to have some regards for weaker players or newbies
is not a sign of weakness (IMO quite the opposite).
Playing in the spirit of sportsmanship does by no means keep you from playing
competitively and to strive for victory.
The common misconception is that sportsmanship would restrict you. But that's
wrong. Sportsmanship represents no restriction for a good player. Being skilled
and playing effectively and successfully while playing sportsmanlike is no contradiction.
In fact I believe that such players are held in higher regards and are more
respected than skilled players who display poor behaviour.
BTW, sportsmanship does not presuppose skill. I think a player has much more
chance to gain some respect while not being very skilled (yet) when being sportsmanlike
than otherwise. Nobody respects an asshole that isn't even skilled :-)
But of course it could have an impact
on that precious personal score of yours.
To disregard sportsmanship and to go deathmatching, or respawn camping, or to
join the leading and more skilled team works often wonders on a personal score.
And a lot of people like to define their level of skill by personal score (lol).
After almost 2 years I still fail to see what people draw from their personal
score on pub games and how people can take pride or joy from their score when
the game offered few comptetition. (Not to mention that both personal score
and even the team score is rather fleeting as much as pub games are concerned.)
In my opinion there is nothing more
enjoyable than playing on a server with a good and friendly atmosphere, where
people treat each other with respect and where the game is tough and competitive
without cheap tactics and poor behaviour.
